Kids exposed to the Hazelwood coal fire in 2014 are having their health monitored in the Hazelwood Health Study, and this data has shown that there is a clear link between kids lung health and the health of their blood vessels. We know that in adults there is a link between lung function and heart dysfunction but it has not been clear if the same link exists in kids. The researchers found a link between poorer lung function and stiffer blood vessels. Exposure to smoke particles had a minimal effect on this link suggesting it is established early in life. The authors say the data suggests that the link is driven by the impact stiffer blood vessels have on the mechanics of the lung.
