Aussie researchers have conducted a review of current evidence for the effects of acute and long-term heart disease for patients with COVID-19. The risk of more severe infection and death from COVID-19 is increased in patients who have pre-existing heart disease, however COVID-19 has also been shown to cause heart disease including high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and heart failure. The researchers suggest that studies are needed to determine the patients who are most at risk of long-term heart disease so targeted follow-ups and patient care can be provided.
