Gaps in contraception advice for some Aucklanders

Publicly released:
New Zealand

Just over one in three new mums said they had discussed contraception with a health worker before getting pregnant, according to a study of those who had just given birth at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland. Very few (3.5 per cent) intended to get pregnant within the next year, yet the survey revealed a lack of information on post-birth contraception planning. The authors say some barriers to contraceptive use remain, particularly concern about side effects - mentioned by half of the canvassed mothers. The team recommends addressing these concerns in a culturally-centred way.
