Among the measures to help counter COVID-19 vaccine misinformation on X (formerly Twitter), crowdsourced 'community notes' were introduced in 2022. Now, US scientists have analysed 657 of these and say the notes they looked at primarily addressed adverse events and conspiracy theories, were accurate, cited moderate and credible sources, and were generally attached to posts that had been viewed hundreds of millions of times. Community notes provide an opportunity for the healthcare community to push back against mis- and disinformation about vaccines on social media, they say, and improve vaccine education among the public.
