A survey of more than 300 New Zealand tertiary students found almost every single one of them consume some level of caffeine, with 14 per cent above the safe limit. One quarter of those who used the stimulant also reported experiencing side effects that led to distress or negatively impacted their life. However these side effects - such as being unable to sleep, a fast or uneven heartbeat, or an upset stomach - did not curtail consumption in the majority of those experiencing them.
