Celebrities' social media posts promoting unhealthy food and drinks may undermine efforts to ban youth-targeted ads. Researchers analysed the nutritional quality of foods and beverages shown in Instagram posts from 181 highly-followed actors, athletes, TV personalities and musicians. They found that almost 90% of the 5180 posts were unhealthy enough to fail youth advertising standards in the UK, and that images of healthy foods had significantly fewer likes and comments. Snacks and sweets were the most commonly shared images of food and more than half of the drinks pictured were alcoholic. While less than 5% of the posts were sponsored by food or beverage companies, sponsored posts containing images of drinks had more than twice the alcohol content than their non-sponsored counterparts.
