A review of studies on the advertisement and sale of illicit drugs to young people on social media has found that around 13% of social media posts advertise illicit drugs. The authors say the advertisement and sale of drugs through socia media is likely to increase, and the promotion of drug content is increasing in sophistication to appeal to young people. They say that for cannabis in particular, posts are shifting towards healthy, glamourous and seemingly legal depictions of drugs. They also found that popular platforms used by adolescents such as TikTok are rarely studied.
