Those who received the first COVID-19 boosters in the UK have much better protection against the virus than their double vaccinated counterparts, according to British researchers. The team used data from the ongoing COVBOOST trial in the UK to estimate the effectiveness of the Pfizer and Moderna boosters compared to double vaccination and no vaccination. For those who had AstraZeneca, the researchers say a Pfizer booster is 89.6 per cent effective relative to double vaccination at preventing symptomatic disease, and Moderna is 95.3 per cent effective. For those who had Pfizer first, the relative effectiveness of the Pfizer booster is 82.8 per cent and Moderna 90.9 per cent compared to double vaccination. The effectiveness rates were higher relative to unvaccinated individuals.
