Bold reform needed in services for rangatahi Māori

Publicly released:
New Zealand

Researchers have interviewed 13 Māori youth development workers in depth about their work in health and social services. They highlighted problems including contract-driven systems, under-resourcing, and institutional racism - which they said eroded rangatahi wellbeing, and left them and their whānau with limited options. Despite this, participants were optimistic about changing current practices, calling for health and social services to: enable rangatahi leadership, address their diverse needs, build relationships, and seek culturally-centred solutions.
