Older and middle-aged people with tinnitus are more likely to sleep poorly and have mental health problems, according to international researchers. Surveying 1,173 people with tinnitus, a condition causing ringing in the ears, researchers found they reported more symptoms of depression and anxiety than 4,245 people surveyed without the condition. Those with tinnitus also reported poorer sleep quality. As this is an observational study, it cannot show tinnitus causes poor sleep or mental health problems, but can show there may be an association between the two.
