Australian, New Zealand and international researchers looked at data on whether risky drinkers in Australia, New Zealand, Scotland and England are more likely to drink at licensed premises - bars or pubs - or in a private setting. They found risky drinkers are more likely to drink at home in all four countries, with Australians the most likely to forgo the pub in favour of home drinking - 80% of Aussie drinking occasions were at home. The figure for New Zealand was 72%, while 61.7% and 60.7% of drinking occasions were at home in England and Scotland, respectively. They also found that people in all four countries drank more at home than they would at the pub. The authors say it's important to consider the high proportion of heavy drinking that occurs in the home, particularly as delivery services now mean alcohol is easier to access at home than ever before.
