Canadian and Saudi scientists brought together and re-analysed the data from 53 previous studies, including a total of nearly 9,000 kids, and say around a quarter (24.73%) of children with type 2 diabetes are not obese. Overall, boys with type 2 diabetes were slightly more likely to be obese than girls and Asian kids with the condition were the least likely to be obese, while white children were the most likely, they found. The results suggest not all kids with type 2 diabetes are obese, and the authors suggest future studies should look into the role of obesity in the development of type 2 diabetes in kids.

Prevalence of Obesity Among Children With Type 2 Diabetes

About The Study: The findings of systematic review and meta-analysis of 53 studies including 8,900 participants suggest that obesity is not a universal phenotype in children with type 2 diabetes. Further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanisms beyond obesity driving this condition in children.
