Trans and gender diverse people could be almost twice as likely to experience physical or sexual violence than the cis gender community, according to US scientists. The team brought together and re-analysed the data from 94 previous studies on the prevalence of physical and sexual violence among trans and gender diverse adults around the globe and say around two in three (64%) have experienced physical or sexual violence during their lives, while three in five (60%) have experienced it recently. Looking at the data from the general population, the rate of lifetime experience of physical violence was just over one in three (36%), while one in three (33%) had experienced sexual violence. There is an urgent need to address violence against trans and gender diverse people through the implementation of evidence-based violence prevention and response strategies, the authors conclude.
