US researchers say mosquitoes that live in residential areas with higher property values are more likely to be resistant to pesticides. The team buzzed about 31 residential areas in the US state of North Carolina and sampled the invasive tiger mozzies that called the neighbourhoods home. They found the mozzies that were most resistant to widely used insecticide chemicals were those that lived in the areas with the highest property values. The team suggests that this is likely due to people in these areas more frequently using household sprays or contracted pest control, leading to unintentional mosquito evolution.
