Scandinavian researchers suggest there is a link between taking ADHD medication and a decreased risk of mental health related issues and death in adolescents and adults with ADHD. The team looked into the mental wellbeing of over 220,000 people with ADHD, and found lisdexamphetamine and other amphetamine derivatives - commonly prescribed for the condition - were associated with fewer people being hospitalised for psychiatric reasons, non-psychiatric reasons, and fewer suicide attempts and/or deaths by suicide. This kind of study cannot prove that the medication is reducing these risks directly, but the researchers believe the drugs might have additional beneficial results on top of the management of their condition.
