Olive oil could be linked with a lower risk of dementia-related death, particularly in women, according to international researchers who looked at data from 92,383 adults observed over 28 years. They found the consumption of more than 7g per day of olive oil was associated with a 28% lower risk of dementia-related death, compared with never or rarely consuming olive oil, and these findings remained even when adjusting for diet quality. The team estimates that substituting 5g per day of margarine and mayonnaise with olive oil could also be associated with lower dementia-related death risk, but not when substituting butter and other vegetable oils. While the study cannot prove direct cause and effect, the findings extend current dietary recommendations of choosing olive oil and other vegetable oils for brain health, the team says.
