Researchers have used the government's new daily happiness metrics to gauge how the pandemic affected the mood of the nation. They found that New Zealanders spent more time getting unhappier in 2020 than the year before, with the worst dips linked to the Australian bushfires in January, the first Covid case in Australia, and then the two Covid-19 lockdowns. The researchers say that jobseeker support payments and international travel increased the likelihood of being happy post-lockdown.
