Australia's energy future is top of mind with the release of South Australia's energy plan - but what's really behind rising power prices, blackouts and shortages? How is our grid set up, and what role can renewables, gas, or an emissions trading scheme play? Join us as three experts explain all things electricity, including how the system works and why it sometimes fails.

The briefing will discuss the following issues:

  • Energy infrastructure and grids, energy storage, baseload power, backup generation, and how renewables and extreme weather interact with the above
  • Cost-related issues and mechanisms, including the AEMO and load shedding, the RET, and the emissions intensity scheme
  • The role of gas in the current energy debate

Speakers:

  • Assoc. Prof. Iain MacGill is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales, and Joint Director (Engineering) for the University’s Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM)
  • Andrew Stock is a Climate Councillor at the Climate Council with over 40 years' experience in executive roles spanning traditional energy suppliers, emerging energy technologies and renewables
    • conflict of interest: Andrew is on the boards of CEFC and Horizon Oil, and Chairs the Energy and Resources Faculty Advisory Boards at Melbourne and Adelaide Universities
  • Dylan McConnell is a PhD candidate at the Australian-German Climate & Energy College and was an author of the Melbourne Energy Institute's Renewable Energy Technology Cost Review
