BACKGROUND BRIEFING: Flu season - will 2017 be the biggest on record?

The Immunisation Coalition has recorded 71,256 laboratory confirmed cases as of 14 August, and there are four strains of the flu virus in circulation. Join members of the Immunisation Coalition at this online briefing to hear about this year's flu trends, and ask them your questions.

  • How many cases of flu there are in Australia, and who is being affected
  • What the estimated flu vaccination rates are, and whether it is too late to get vaccinated
  • Which virus strains are circulating and whether the viruses are mutating
  • Why people seem to underestimate the risk of flu and it's complications
  • Treatment options and the pressure on hospitals and GP surgeries

  • Prof Paul Van Buynder is Chairman of the Immunisation Coalition, a Professor in the School of Medicine at Griffith University and a Public Health Physician with the Gold Coast Health Service
  • Prof Bill Rawlinson is a Senior Medical Virologist at NSW Health Pathology
  • Prof Lou Irving is Director of Respiratory Medicine at Melbourne Health
