A veteran who lost his penis in an explosion has a successful transplant

Embargoed until: Publicly released:

A veteran who lost his penis in an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) has received a successful transplantation of a penis, along with a scrotum, and lower abdominal wall from a donor, say US doctors. Previously only four other successful penis transplants have been reported. The IED explosion caused the man to lose both legs along with most of his penis, testicles and substantial tissue in his abdomen. A year on from the transplant the man is able to achieve near-normal erections and is able to orgasm. He reports “feeling whole” again and states that he is very satisfied with the transplant and the implications it carries for his future.
