Embargoed until: Publicly released:
Peer-reviewed: This work was reviewed and scrutinised by relevant independent experts.

Observational study: A study in which the subject is observed to see if there is a relationship between two or more things (eg: the consumption of diet drinks and obesity). Observational studies cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that they are linked.

Case study: A study involving observations of a single patient or group of patients.

People: This is a study based on research using people.

Kiwi scientists looked at recent data to re-visit which food sources are responsible for Campylobacter infections, a common form of food poisoning caused by bacteria. Poultry still remains the lead culprit, with 84% of Campylobacter infections in New Zealand linked to strains that came from chicken. The study authors write there’s been a relatively small drop in Campylobacter infections since 2008, and that this study has provided the impetus for food safety authorities to set a new goal to reduce foodborne campylobacteriosis by 20% from 2020 to 2025.
