COVID-19 risks higher for those with Down Syndrome
Observational study: A study in which the subject is observed to see if there is a relationship between two or more things (eg: the consumption of diet drinks and obesity). Observational studies cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that they are linked.
Case study: A study involving observations of a single patient or group of patients.
People: This is a study based on research using people.
Those with Down syndrome could be 10 times more likely to die from COVID-19, and four times more likely to be hospitalised by it, according to international researchers, who say this group of people should be strategically protected. The researchers analysed data from a study of 8.26 million adults in the UK and say heart issues and care home living among those with Down Syndrome contributes some, but not all of the risk, and further researcher must be taken to understand their elevated health risks.
