Biography

Eleanor (Ellie) Sansom completed her MSci in Geophysics at Imperial College, London and completed her PhD. with the Desert Fireball Network team in Perth, Australia.

Bright shooting stars (fireballs) can sometimes result in a meteorite falling to Earth. The DFN aims to observe these fireballs to recover meteorites with orbits by using its distributed network of cameras across the Australian outback. When fireballs are photographed from different locations, their atmospheric flight and orbit can be calculated.
Ellie now manages the DFN project and as a postdoctoral researcher, looks at different ways of finding out the size of these objects hitting the Earth.
Ellie has participated in radio broadcasts and has a keen interest in inspiring the next generation in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
